JUPITER, FL – September 14, 2011 – Making their Palm Beach International Raceway debuts this weekend are the two exhibition acts headlining Fun Ford Weekend presented by Roush Yates and JE Pistons. Chicago-native Animal Jim Feurer brings his 1979 Mercury Zephyr while David Douthit of San Diego pilots the Focus This, jet-powered Ford Focus wagon for this one-day celebration of Ford muscle and horsepower.
Animal Jim Feurer brings the Legendary 1979 Mammoth Mercury Zephyr to PBIR this Saturday. Nicknamed “Zeke” this race car made Animal Jim a major match race star. From 1979 to 1990, Jim piloted Zeke in every sanction, circuit and event possible; Feurer tuned and drove the race car to more than 200 wins, awards, records and three World Championships (1988-1990). During its heyday, Zeke’s best ET was 7.14 at 199.9 mph. Animal Jim and Zeke will tear up PBIR’s drag strip for two exhibition runs this weekend.
David Douthit debuts his jet-powered 2000 Ford Focus wagon at Palm Beach International Raceway this weekend. Family owned and operated, the ‘Focus This’ machine takes 30 gallons of diesel fuel to make a pass down PBIR’s quarter-mile drag strip. This unique compact car is powered by a General Electric J-85 engine, producing 10,000 horsepower and a top speed of 200 miles per hour. In 1993, one week after graduating high school, David obtained his jet dragster license and has been piloting jet-powered vehicles ever since. In addition to the jet-powered capabilities, the ‘Focus This’ machine also has a spectacular neon light show.
In addition to the exhibition runs by Feurer and Douthit, the competition will be fierce as seven drag racing classes compete for titles and trophies in the Quick Ford (Electronic), Fast Ford (Non-Electronic), True Street (DOT), Quick 16 Dragster and Doorcar points races, Four-Door Frenzy, Tough Trucks, Mustang Madness and Compact categories.
Nearly 100 Mustangs will make their way to PBIR on Saturday as part of the Steeda Stampede. The 12th Annual Steeda Stampede begins at 8am at the Steeda Autosports Headquarters in Pompano Beach, FL. The Steeda Stampede Mustangs will participate in the Fun Ford Weekend activities at PBIR including drag racing, car show and autocross. For more information on the Steeda Stampede, visit www.Steeda.com.
Local celebrity, racer and radio personality Joe Castello of Hollywood, FL, will be heard throughout Palm Beach International Raceway as the official announcer of Fun Ford Weekend. An avid drag racer and fan of motorsports, Castello is a respected voice in the racing industry both in South Florida and nationwide. Castello is host of the widely popular drag racing internet radio show WFO Radio.
Those looking to admire the classic, custom and modern Fords can stroll over to the Car Show hosted by South Florida Stangs.net. More than 30 awards will be given in a variety of car show classes at PBIR this weekend. The car show entry is $30, or $25 if purchased in advance at www.racepbir.com. PBIR offers a discount to car and truck clubs during Fun Ford Weekend. Clubs of 10 or more that register in advance save $15 on each car show entry; must register as a group and paid in advance.
In addition to the racing and car shows, spectators and attendees are invited to the north end of PBIR’s road course to participate in the autocross portion of the event. Available to amateur and competitive participants, the solo-timed competition takes place on turns two through nine of PBIR’s state-of-art road course. The autocross is often a favorite of muscle car enthusiasts that want to test everything from handling and suspension to tire grip. To participate in the autocross event, the cost is $25 per entrant. Autocross tickets can be purchased in advance at www.racepbir.com for a reduced rate of $20.
Fun Ford Weekend would not be complete unless there was a swap meet. Racers and auto enthusiasts searching for that hard-to-find part for their custom car might find what they’re looking for during the Swap Meet at PBIR’s Fun Ford Weekend. Swap meet spaces (10x10) are available for $20. All swap meet entry fees include the participant entry.
